Han C.W. Hsiao (蕭震緯, formerly Han-Wen Hsiao) received a BS degree in physics from Fu Jen Catholic University in 1988, a MS degree in atmospheric physics with an emphasis on satellite remote sensing from National Central University in 1990, and a PhD degree in civil engineering with a specialization in geoinformatics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1999. During his graduate study in the US, he worked respectively for the Robotics Center and the Business Process Division of Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (CERL) of Corps of Engineers, US Army. He also participated in the UIUC Digital Library Initiative (DLI) Project for more than two years. After graduation, he joined as a postdoctoral researcher in the information system research team of the Office of the National Science and Technology Program for Hazards Mitigation. He has been with Asia University (formerly Taichung Healthcare and Management University) since fall 2001, where he is currently an associate professor in the Department of Bioinformatics, and also holds a joint appointment with the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. Currently, he serves as the director of the Center for International Academic Exchange, which is a university center responsible for foreign student affairs as well as international communication and cooperation. In the meantime, he joins the Center for Semantic Biomedical Computing at Asia University, where he leads the intelligent computation group for semantic retrieval of multimedia. Dr. Hsiao is very active in academic activities. He served as the local arrangement chair of the 5th IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia Software Engineering (MSE 2003), the registration chair of the 4th IEEE International Syposium on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering (BIBE 2004), the registration chair of the first IEEE International Conference on Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous, and Trustworthy Computing (SUTC 2006), the registration chair of the IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (ISM 2007), the panel co-chair of the first IEEE International Conference on Semantic Computing (ICSC 2007), the program committee of the 20th IPPR Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics and Image Processing (CVGIP 2007), the workshop co-chair of the Bioinformatics and Biomedical Informatics Workshop in conjunction with 2007 National Computer Symposium (NCS 2007), the publication and registration chair of the second IEEE International Conference on Sensor Networks, Ubiquitous, and Trustworthy Computing (SUTC 2008), the Registration Chair of the 11th World Conference on Integrated Design & Process Technology (IDPT 2008), the program committee & paper reviewer of the 21th IPPR Conference on Computer Vision, Graphics and Image Processing (CVGIP 2008), the program committee & paper reviewer of the 16th International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE 2008) scheduled in October 2008, the technical program committee & paper reviewer of the IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia (ISM2008) scheduled in December 2008, the program committee & paper reviewer of the IEEE Asia-Pacific Services Computing Conference (IEEE APSCC 2008) scheduled in December 2008, and the publication & registration chair of the IEEE 9th International Symposium on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering (BIBE 2009) scheduled in June 2009. His research interests are in the areas of geoinformatics, bioinformatics, pattern recognition, data mining, and image processing. Recently, his research direction focuses on semantic computing for biomedical and multimedia data. Dr. Hsiao is a member of the Chinese Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society.
